Feeling the weight of leadership?

"We need a mass mobilization that draws on all our strengths. We need an integrated approach to investing in our youth, one that involves the family, the school and the community.
Such a philosophy is already succeeding at The Vito Marcantonio School (PS/IS 50) in East Harlem. Three years ago, PS/IS 50 was on the road to failure. Gangs were a problem and one-third of PS/IS 50's students scored far below the standards on math and literacy tests.
Then came a remarkable principal on a mission named Rebekah Marler-, whom schools chancellor Joel Klein persuaded to take on the challenge. Between her leadership, the support of City Year and the Children's Aid Society, and a whole-child focus - working relentlessly not only on kids' academic well-being but also on their home life, neighborhoods and other influences - these kids are turning the corner."
"I was looking for someone who had wrestled with the questions I was wrestling with about leadership and had some answers. I was introduced to Rebekah by a former colleague who upon hearing about Rebekah’s work and the type of support she was providing principals knew it might be exactly what I was seeking. It was. Her approach struck me as a combination of systems to support consistent execution, irrespective of individual strengths and weaknesses, and a coaching model which could grow the entire organization at every level. Rebekah has a strongly developed understanding of how to leverage highly impactful management and leadership practices together in a powerful way."
"Rebekah is very introspective and extremely skilled at providing perspective. I feel what sets a coach apart is their ability to truly listen, understand, empathize, yet push you out of your existing space (even if it is mental). She is skilled at doing all of those things while providing amazing perspective and her ability to re-set mindsets is amazing; all while teaching a theory or model for those of us (like me) who like to understand the "why" or who may want to go do more research and reading. She has an amazing ability to connect what seem to be disparate thoughts and concepts into a sensical framework. Rebekah finds a way to connect logic with the spirit with emotions which help others to understand and engage each of these areas without feeling the need to deny any area. Most of all, I appreciate her openness to share; to be vulnerable. It exudes trust and creates a space for others to willingly share."
“Working with Rebekah has been amazing! Our meetings are more strategic, productive and student-focused. Student achievement has increased, and with more time to provide our teachers with monitoring and feedback, instruction is improving. Students who have never made the Honor Roll have grown by leaps and bounds. My job satisfaction has increased tremendously since working with Rebekah. As school leaders, we are constantly in a race against time. The calendars that she helped us to create, provide a strategic approach to managing and leading a school through the improvement process. Because they are created in a collaborative manner and shared with the team, the anxiety is removed, and all members of the team are accountable for how their time is spent. This planning process has afforded me the opportunity to increase student achievement and spend more time with my family, which is priceless.I believe all school leaders can benefit from the work Rebekah has done, and I look forward to increasing the quality of urban education as a result of her leadership training. “
"Nothing is more important than how a coach listens, takes in, reflects, questions, and gives feedback in the context of the coaching dialogue and Rebekah does an awesome job with pacing the conversation, and not being afraid to keep it focused and on-target. When providing feedback, she strives to make it clear, make it relevant, never evaluative, make it helpful, and make it positive. Finally, she gives it time and makes learning and coaching explicit priorities as we all know time is tight for everyone."
“It is a privilege for me to write a testimonial about Rebekah Marler and her work with me during my second year as Headmaster at the Covenant School in Charlottesville, VA. As a husband and father, I have found that the greatest challenge with my work has been how to balance the different areas of my life. My efforts in the past have generally failed because I did not have an effective system to address the way that I structured my time. I have read multiple books and attended various conferences but it wasn’t until I was able to work with Rebekah that I was able to achieve my time management goals. Probably one of the most important skills that Rebekah helped me to put in place was a structure that allowed me to fully utilize the gifts of my entire team so that I didn’t feel like I had to carry the whole load. I would highly recommend Rebekah to anyone who is frustrated with their inability to fully utilize their professional gifts while also maintaining time to honor your commitments to your family and children."
